MADNESS frontman Suggs has officially opened a new day care centre for adults with learning disabilities and autism in Northampton.

The popstar cut the ribbon at The Cube in Roe Road, Abington, yesterday which has been built on the site of a former printing factory.

The new facility has a gym, computer room, dance studio and will be a place where adults with autism and complex needs can socialise and make new friends.

Owner Jelena Milic, who has also set up two similar facilities in Daventry, said the new centre was fulfilling a gap in adult disability services in Northampton.

She said: “I think it is great for the people of Northampton. It is giving people choices. We are trying to give them a chance to do things they’ve never done before and fill a gap in service.

“We have been very well supported by the Abington community who are behind what we are trying to do.”

Suggs said: “It is phenomenal in the current climate that this would happen at all and it is a fantastic space. It is a very heart warming tale.

“I think it is really extraordinary. I asked Jelena if she wants to manage my band because she obviously gets things done.”

The centre will be open from Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm but will also be open on one afternoon in the week for members of the local community to come in and have a cup of tea.

The centre will charge fees but it is hoped adults will pay by using part of their personal disability budgets.

Former Daventry MP Lord Tim Boswell said the centre was an example of “the big society”.

He said: “Even if it is a commercial operation there is also room for social enterprise. It is a tremendous facility.”

Prior to acceptance to The Cube all clients need to attend a pre-admission interview together with their designated parent, guardian or carer. To discuss admission call Northampton 603110.
