Chris Foreman
The Songwriters of Norton Folgate The Songwriters of Norton Folgate Chris Foreman Gives Us an Advanced Screening of the Liner Notes What with gigs like the Hackney Empire series in mid-2008, the Madness fan community was treated to a healthy dollop of forthcoming tracks off the long-belated "The Liberty Of Norton Folgate" album. "Great songs!" said one and all. "When are they coming out?" followed so soon. And finally, "Who wrote what?" was the cry from the masses. It became a game. A preference of single became a challenge to name the songwriters. Guesses made, Chrissy Boy revealed the songwriters for Norton. In reverse chronological order, here is the thread. From: Chris Foreman Date: Jul 28, 2008 8:07 am Dear Steve Some surprises there maybe. Suggs is writing a lot of songs and really they are really good lyrics too. How about Woody too? all the best Chris Bingo (Thompson/Barson)-correct Let's Go (McPherson/Barson)-correct Dust Devil (Thompson/Woodgate)-correct Forever Young (Foreman/McPherson)-wrong McPherson solo Norton Folgate (McPherson/Barson)-wrong McPherson solo We Are London (Smash)-correct Clerkenwell Polka (Smash)-correct MKII (Smash/McPherson) correct but other way round McPherson/Smash [words/music this is the traditional way to give the credits] I've Been on The Town (Barson)wrong Woodgate/Barson Idiot Child (Thompson/Barson)-correct Mission From Hell (Thompson/Barson)-correct Hunchback of Torrianno (Thompson/Foreman)-wrong Thompson/Woodgate Sugar And Spice (McPherson/Barson)wrong- I think it's just Mike Kiss (Thompson/Barson)wrong Mcpherson/Barson One Fine Day (Who knows? Some of these you've already given me, so don't be too impressed. :) Bingo (Thompson/Barson) Let's Go (McPherson/Barson) Dust Devil (Thompson/Woodgate) Forever Young (Foreman/McPherson) Norton Folgate (McPherson/Barson) We Are London (Smash) Clerkenwell Polka (Smash) MKII (Smash/McPherson) Out on the Town (Barson) Idiot Child (Thompson/Barson) Mission From Hell (Thompson/Barson) Hunchback of Torrianno (Thompson/Foreman) Sugar And Spice (McPherson/Barson) Kiss (Thompson/Barson) One Fine Day (Who knows? Never heard it) That Close (Must be Foreman, never heard it) Seven Dials (All songs never heard are Foreman) Africa (Englebert Humperdink) Wow me with just how off-base I am. :) Do so before I leave back for New Mexico on Thursday and it might even make the MTR this weekend. Booya. Best Steve PS - Next we speak, let's talk of a 2 Tone Reuninon Revue. Hung out with Dave Wakeling again today and he's really hip to talking with you about getting something together for next year's 30th anniversary of 2 Tone. Dude, that would be so cool. I'm not kidding. He really wants to talk with you. PPS - Changing my mind. Let's Go would make the best single. It's got a tough rollickin' groove that isn't quite typical Madness, a uniqueness that'll throw everyone for a loop, and not in a shitty "Sorry" kind of way. From: Chris Foreman Date: Jul 19, 2008 7:42 am Funny you should say that it goes down really well but a few of the band don't much like it. Like Johnny The Horse. Same author actually. I quite like it myself but it goes on a bit too long. Tell you what - you tell me who you think wrote what songs and I'll tell you if you're right. You may be surprised at the lineage of some of them... Chris From: Steve Bringe Date: Jul 17, 2008 11:32 pm Howdy Chris, I've decided. Ditch "Forever Young" and release "Clerkenwell Polka" as the next single instead. The Rockboy has spoken. Best Steve Interview by Steve Bringe July 2008 © 2008 Madness Central. All Rights Reserved.
