Madness Central Downloads  Irving Plaza, New York City, USA - April 30, 1999
Madness - Irving Plaza, New York City, New York, USA - April 30, 1999

It was the day after Madness' triumphant return to US broadcast television, having taken the stage at the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway, the musical guests on the Late Show with David Letterman. April 30, 1999, would be the first of three shows in America to showcase their much-loved classics and soon-to-be-loved classics in the making.

Madness was playing Irving Plaza, one of the finer intimate venues in New York City that in recent years has hosted the likes of U2 and Coldplay. For their first shows on the East Coast in over 20 years, Madness really couldn't have chosen a better venue for their capacity crowd.

As I have before with the early bootlegs I taped (literally taped), let me apologise for the lousy sound quality. There are so many excuses this time around. I was right up front again in the shove-and-shuffle with the minicassettte recoder in one hand, the other trying to steady the wife (now ex). And speaking of the ex, you'll get the joy of hearing her screech and sing so far off-key she's closer to a liquored up Gregorian chant than "The Sun and the Rain"... my, do I miss her. Plus, I was well liquored up myself and having a great time talking with all my new friends who I was unwittingly dry-humping seeing as we were sardined and jostled the entire night.

What makes this live recording worth sharing is it's the first time "Lovestruck" and "The Communicator" were played before a live audience. The release of "Wonderful" was still a month off, so this was the first chance Madness fans had at peaking behind the curtain at the wizard (no, "The Wizard" was not peformed.) The verdict? The songs went down as if they'd been on the same Geffen album as "Our House" 26 years earlier. Americans (and the Brits who were also in the audience having made the flight across the Pond) loved the new songs.

Main Set:
One Step Beyond
Embarrassment
The Prince
The Sun and the Rain
My Girl
Lovestruck
House of Fun
Shut Up
Grey Day
Baggy Trousers
It Must Be Love
Bed & Breakfast Man
Our House
Madness

Encore:
Night Boat To Cairo
The Communicator

This concert recording is a direct rip of the front and back of the minicassette recording. Yep, I'm too lazy to splice and index the tracks. The first file takes you up through "It Must Be Love" and the second file encapsulates the remaining songs and the encores. I've also included scans of the concert ticket stub and the VIP pass from that night.
