MADNESS: King Biscuit Flower Hour

Concert riots, concert ticket prices, and just not being able to get to the concerts all had their part in the creation of the King Biscuit Flower Hour, a syndicated radio show produced by the D.I.R. Radio Network of New York, New York. Every Sunday night from the early 1970's on through to the early 1990's, you could tune in to subscriber radio stations across the US (and a few other countries, like Canada and Australia) and get a professionally-recorded broadcast of the hottest names of the day burning up the charts.

Madness had their spot on the Flower Hour on the September 18, 1983 radio transcription, sharing the double-LP radio show with Robert Palmer live from New York City. A recording of their 23rd of August show of the same year, live at the Fountain Casino in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, USA, Madness' slot took in a little under a half hour of the one hour show. Needless to say, with these radio transcription LPs, you're not getting the entire performance. What you do get is truly cool, though, including a ballad version of "My Girl" and a Klemzer-flavored take on "Night Boat to Cairo."

The zip file for this show includes a single mp3 composed of Side B, Side C, promotional spot, show intro, and show outro, all ripped from the original vinyl, as well as scans of the original promo sheet and cue sheet for the broadcast. We've also stuffed scans of the Side B and Side C LP labels; Side A is dedicated to the first part of Robert Palmer's gig.

Side B:
House Of Fun, Disappear

Side C:
My Girl, Embarrassment, Night Boat To Cairo, Tomorrow's Just Another Day, Our House, It Must Be Love
