Taken from a reel-to-reel recording off the original masters, this concert, Madness live from the Fountain Casino in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, USA, is best known as the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio transcription double LP released in 1983. The thing about the transcription, though, like most radio transcriptions, is that it's an edited-for-time selection of a few songs from the gig. Here for the first time is the Fountain Casino concert in its entirety.
There's a connection, and correction, to Madness lore with this performance. Arriving late to the gig was not what Madness had intended, but it was unavoidable... or perhaps the correct word is avoidable, considering the band was trying to duck a process server bent on nailing our boys with a summons from a disgruntled, misguided chap with delusions that he alone was responsible for Madness' record deal with Geffen in America, and hence was owed a cut of the action. If you cruise by the official Madness website, though, and look at the timeline therein, you'll see that this altercation is credited to the concert the night before at The Pier in New York City. Listen for the banter between Suggs, Chas and the audience for confirmation of the legal hooha on this night in New Jersey. I'll have to let Chrissy Boy know of his error in memory..
