Madness Central Downloads  The Argonauts
The Argonauts - Apeman & Under My Thumb

The Argonauts is one of the most requested downloads over the last ten years, and it's one I've been hesitant to post as it kind of flies in the face of our mantra of not posting commercially available recordings. I think we're safe on this one, though, as there were so few of these 7" singles pressed, they were only available from the Madness Information Service, and there's not much chance that the songs will be re-released.

So many people want a copy of this one-off project by Lee Thompson, and so many people pay upwards of a 100 quid just to hear the songs, I thought it'd be nice to let folks hear what they're missing in this cooperative of information exchange known as Madness Central.

By way of an explanation of The Argonauts, this official release is taken from MIS Comic XIV:

Apeman was written and recorded originally by The Kinks and topped the charts back in 1970. It's now been re-recorded by the Argonauts, flip side is called Under My Thumb, an old hit for the Rolling Stones.

It will be on sale exclusively to MIS members and will go on sale in your local record shops at a later date, if any distributor decides to distribute the masterpiece. Proceeds will be forwarded to Greenpeace.

The cost of the single will be £1.30 inclusive of postage and packing. Please make cheques or postal orders payable to M.I.S and head your envelopes M.I.S Argonauts Single Offer. P.O Box 75, London, N1 0SA. Allow 4 weeks deliver. This is a limited offer.

The catalog number on the 7" single is LYN 18249/50; on the A side runout groove of the disc is etched 18249.15 - on the B side it is 18250.15. The B side features a printed paper label while the paper label on the A side is typically blank. I have a "blank" label as well as one that is signed by Lee Thompson. Some fans received handwritten notes from Lee as well.

The project was recorded at Madness' Liquidator Studios in late-1985/early-1986.

This download is brought to you by several Madness Central fans. Thanks to 4BF, Rastafari, and Nigel the Mad Irishman for their detailed information, and thanks to Lee Loobyloo Buckley for sending me the mp3s she had (saving me from having to unbury my turntable and rip the tracks off my vinyl).

If you do download The Argonauts, I'd like to suggest you send a donation to Greenpeace for at least £1.30 (it's over twenty years later, so use your discretion based upon the rate of inflation).
