Madness Central Downloads  9:30 Club, Washington DC, USA - May 1, 1999
9:30 Club, Washington DC, USA - May 1, 1999

I'll be the first to admit. The quality of this recording seriously lags hard. The culprit is an old minicassette recorder I'd had for many years. Remember, 1999 was still a few years too early for pocket-size digital recorders, and the minicassette recorder was the smallest device I could smuggle into the venue down the front of my shorts. (No lame "size" jokes at this point, please. Grow up.)

What makes this recording worth sharing is that it is the first time the songs "Drip Fed Fred" and "Johnny The Horse" were played to a live audience.

Ian Dury had already been recorded at Westside Studio for "Drip Fed Fred", and when I was told they were going to be playing it that night I was nervous they'd have a backing track doing most of the vocals for the song. Not so. Lee Thompson stood right up and sang it true. I love Uncle Ian, but I wish Lee would have featured on the album instead.

These early performances of "Johnny The Horse" differed some as well. With the introductory and closing refrain of "Johnny the Horse was kicked to death" the second line "He died for entertainment" goes down the scale rather than upwards like on the studio recording. You can hear Suggs struggling a touch with the deeper vox, which may be why the upscale alternative was used in the final mix.

This zip file contains two tracks which emcompass most of the main set ("One Step Beyond", "Embarrassment" and "The Sun and the Rain" were missed at the beginning) but not the encores (one of which was "The Communicator"). We were dead center up front and the bouncers kept motioning me to put the recorder away, as an explaination of the missing tracks. I had to sneak recording time in when I could. The zip also has a full-size scan of the concert ticket.

Track One:
My Girl, Lovestruck, House of Fun, Shut Up, Grey Day, Baggy Trousers Track Two:
Drip Fed Fred, It Must Be Love, Bed and Breakfast Man, Johnny The Horse, Our House, Madness
